Janice asked Bill to her of昀椀ce to pore over the 昀椀nancials. “Bill! You’ve got to look at our numbers.” Bill was hoping that there was some good news coming, but from the tone of Janice’s voice, he knew better. “Well, is the patient dying, doctor?” he asked. Janice replied, “Let’s just say it’s on life support. Our sales are down slightly. But the really bad news is, we’re no longer making pro昀椀t — all our improvements and programs have cost us dearly — we’re losing money.” His ego bruised, Bill said, “Janice, we’ve got to do something — anything!…I won’t…I can’t let us fail.” Bill’s Outerwear had never lost money — until now, every year had been at least break-even. If this continued, it would be humiliating. “What do we need to do?” “Bill, we either decide to cut back and let a lot of people go or we invest more than ever and go for it.” Bill’s emotions ran the gamut — it felt safe to shrink the company and go back in time — But could we really? Is there any guarantee that would work? And what about the employees we’d let go and their families? He felt the adrenaline rush of taking a risk and growing the company beyond his imagination — But what about the downside? What if we fail? Bill opened his mouth to reply, but just then he noticed a large man outside Janice’s of昀椀ce. The man was dressed in what looked like a safari out昀椀t. Stuffed in his pockets were…boomerangs. He walked up to Bill and said, “Hello mate, I’m a boomerang man. I believe I can help you.” 9
